Revised rates affect APL ration cards

Under Himachal Pradesh’s Public Distribution System, the prices of two everyday staples have been lifted for families holding Above Poverty Line (APL) cards. Sugar will now be sold at ₹ 52 per kilogram, up from ₹ 48. The cost of urad dal has also been adjusted, rising from ₹ 112 to ₹ 117 per kilogram.

The hike comes just as the festive season is kicking in, a time when household expenses already swell due to heightened demand for sweets, snacks, and traditional dishes. The higher sugar price, in particular, could strain budgets as families bake more confectionery for celebrations.

Stock shortages at some depots

Alongside the price changes, several government warehouses are reporting limited stocks. In a few districts, urad dal and mustard oil have temporarily run out at certain depots, curbing the flow of these items to ration shops.

These supply hiccups add another layer of worry for consumers, especially as the pre‑holiday rush amplifies the need for essential food grains.

Extra kilogram of flour eases the pinch

To soften the impact of the price rise, the state government has introduced a modest relief measure for all ration‑card holders. Throughout October, beneficiaries will receive one additional kilogram of wheat flour, raising the monthly allocation to 13 kg instead of the usual 12 kg.

This extra kilogram is intended to give families a small financial cushion as they navigate the higher costs of sugar and urad dal.

For APL households, however, the new rates mean a larger outlay when buying these two items through the public distribution network. Coupled with intermittent supply issues at certain depots, the festive period poses a tougher budgeting challenge for ration consumers across Himachal Pradesh.
