New Delhi: In a candid video conversation on Friday, Captain Smit Machchhar – the Indian aviator at the centre of the recent Flydubai mid‑air incident – recounted how he continued to fight for control despite being badly hurt.
The chain of events that triggered the emergency
The Flydubai jet was cruising from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an abrupt issue involving the co‑pilot caused the aircraft to lose altitude rapidly. Amid the chaos, Machchhar suffered injuries and the plane entered a steep dive. Passengers and cabin crew eventually forced their way into the cockpit, and the aircraft was later steered to a safe landing in Saudi Arabia.
Machchhar’s description of the decisive moments
From his hospital bed, the captain explained that his decades‑long experience allowed him to sense the aircraft’s accelerating descent even after he was knocked to the floor.
Despite intense pain, he realised immediate action was essential. He pushed the cockpit door open, giving passengers and crew the opportunity to rush in and help stabilise the situation.
Machchhar highlighted his 17‑year flying career – including 11 years as a captain – noting that his training helped him identify the aircraft’s distress cues amid the turmoil.
PM Modi lauds the pilot’s composure
During the discussion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar’s bravery, patience and quick decision‑making, and sent heartfelt wishes for a rapid, full recovery.
The captain became visibly emotional when recalling the instant he recognised the plane’s downward trajectory and felt compelled to intervene rather than remain a passive observer.
Safe landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia
Official reports state the flight carried more than 170 passengers and crew members. After the cabin crew and passengers assisted, a second pair of Flydubai pilots took over and guided the aircraft to a secure touchdown at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Machchhar continues to receive medical treatment following the incident.
Faith as a source of calm
The captain also disclosed that his devotion played a crucial role during the ordeal. He recites the Hanuman Chalisa whenever he faces fear or adversity, and he continued the chant throughout the emergency.
The video call concluded with Prime Minister Modi reiterating his hope for the captain’s swift recuperation after the harrowing episode that endangered the flight and everyone aboard.
