Uttarakhand’s iconic Char Dham pilgrimage — comprising Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri — welcomed an astonishing 56,18,497 devotees in 2023, surpassing the previous high and establishing a new milestone for religious tourism in the region.

Unprecedented Visitor Numbers

The 2023 season saw worshippers from every corner of India, as well as abroad, converge on the four sanctified shrines, pushing the aggregate tally beyond the 56‑lakh mark for the first time. By September 14, the count had already exceeded 50.56 lakh, signalling a steady climb in pilgrim interest.

Prioritising Safety and Comfort

State agencies have stepped up preparations to handle the swelling crowds while protecting their wellbeing. Key enhancements include expanded medical units, stricter traffic regulation, reliable drinking water supplies, upgraded sanitation facilities, and additional parking and lodging options along the mountain routes.

Dedicated emergency squads—comprising district officials, police, health personnel, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other partners—remain on standby, especially on the fragile Himalayan stretches where landslides and adverse weather pose constant threats.

Infrastructure Upgrades Fuel Confidence

Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, major connectivity projects around Kedarnath, Badrinath and the remaining sites have accelerated. New roadways, modernised helipads and refreshed pilgrim amenities have transformed the journey, encouraging even more devotees to embark on the trek.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s Remarks

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami celebrated the achievement, stressing that every pilgrim is regarded as an honoured guest of Uttarakhand. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to provide a safe, comfortable passage for all and praised the collective effort of administrators, police, health workers, SDRF members, local bodies, priests and residents.

With the 2023 Char Dham Yatra crossing the 56‑lakh threshold, Uttarakhand has cemented its reputation as a premier haven for spiritual seekers, setting an ambitious benchmark for future pilgrimage seasons.
