Winter Pause at Gangotri Dham
The Uttarkashi administration announced that the famed Gangotri Temple will officially close its gates for the snowy season on 10 November at 12:05 PM. The timing coincides with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat and the traditional Annakoot and Govardhan Puja festivities.
Ceremonial Send‑off
The temple board, led by secretary Suresh Semwal, finalized the schedule after the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. As the final chimes echo, the ceremonial palanquin carrying the idol of Goddess Ganga will be escorted out amidst a military band, chants of “Jai Maa Ganga,” and the blessings of devotees.
The Trek to Mukhba
Immediately after the closure rites, the sacred palanquin will embark on a short trek to Mukhba, the remote hamlet that serves as Ganga’s winter sanctuary. The convoy is slated to reach the village on 11 November, the day of Bhai Dooj, where a series of prayers and traditional rites will be performed.
Pilgrims are encouraged to visit the temporary shrine set up in Mukhba, where they can offer their respects and receive blessings throughout the six‑month hiatus. This relocation guarantees uninterrupted worship while the main shrine remains inaccessible under heavy snowfall.
Why the Seasonal Shift Matters
The winter shutdown signals the end of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit for the year. Although the high‑altitude location forces the primary sanctum to close, moving the palanquin ensures that the spiritual rhythm of the pilgrimage continues uninterrupted.
For the next half‑year, Mukhba will become the focal point of devotion, allowing pilgrims to stay connected with the divine river goddess until the temple reopens with the arrival of spring.
