Hisar. With the 2029 Haryana Assembly election looming, the state Congress unit is once again locked in a debate over who should steer a prospective government.
Senior figure cautions against premature CM selection
Former Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Sharma has written to the party’s state hierarchy, urging them not to announce a chief‑ministerial contender before the electorate casts its vote. He contends that the Congress should contest the polls on the strength of a united front rather than rallying behind a single personality.
Risks of banking on one face
In his letter addressed to Haryana Congress in‑charge Sanjay Dutt and other senior functionaries, Sharma cites a recent comment by Sachin Pilot that underscores the need to anchor the campaign on Rahul Gandhi and a broader organisational strategy.
Sharma points out that Haryana’s voter base is deeply split along caste, community and regional lines. Elevating a solitary leader too early, he warns, could narrow the party’s appeal and foment unnecessary friction within its own ranks.
Dipender Singh Hooda’s name surfaces
The correspondence also mentions Dipender Singh Hooda, sparking speculation about his possible ambitions for the chief‑ministerial seat.
According to Sharma, pushing Hooda as the party’s 2029 CM front‑runner might alienate other senior figures and strain Congress’s rapport with key community blocs, intensifying internal rivalry.
A call for a policy‑driven, collective campaign
Rather than settling the leadership question prematurely, Sharma proposes that the party concentrate on strengthening its organisational base and crafting a robust electoral blueprint.
He envisions a campaign built on Congress’s collective leadership, a clear policy agenda, and grassroots mobilisation, leaving the final CM decision to be taken after the election, with newly elected MLAs offering input and the central leadership giving the ultimate nod.
Internal divisions resurface
Sharma’s missive has thrust the leadership dilemma back into the public arena, exposing divergent viewpoints within Haryana Congress even though the 2029 polls are still years away.
The episode raises a larger strategic query for the party: should it centre its next campaign around a charismatic individual or present itself as a cohesive organization under shared leadership?
