Committee flags concerns over the release of Sikh inmates

A four‑person team—Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, lawyer Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, Pal Singh France and Balwinder Pal Singh—convened with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to press for the freedom of Sikh prisoners who are serving extended terms.

The delegation contended that numerous convictions merit re‑examination under existing legislation and urged the state to launch a thorough audit that balances humanitarian considerations with legal precedent.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s response

Mann listened carefully and assured that his government would scrutinise each case file with the seriousness it deserves. He emphasized that any corrective measures must adhere strictly to statutory provisions and procedural safeguards.

He further noted that unresolved legal matters left by previous administrations would be prioritised, and that Punjab would explore every legitimate avenue before reaching any decision on clemency.

Next steps and public reaction

Following the meeting, Mann shared a concise briefing on social media, underscoring the administration’s sensitivity to the issue and its commitment to a law‑based resolution.

The committee, which has been campaigning for months, regards the audience with the chief minister as a turning point that could accelerate negotiations and shape forthcoming actions.

"We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice while respecting the rule of law," Mann said in his post.
