Panchkula: Uttarakhand’s chief minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, walked onto the turf of the Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium and took part in the Namo Cricket League’s showcase match, turning the day into a vibrant celebration of sport and solidarity.

A Governor on the Ground

Dhami didn’t limit himself to a brief appearance; he grabbed a bat, bowled a few overs, and mingled with the budding cricketers. The spontaneous innings sparked roars from the audience and reinforced the belief that the playing field welcomes everyone, irrespective of age or rank.

He reflected that being inside the game offers insights a mere spectator can never grasp, underscoring values such as teamwork, discipline, relentless effort, and a laser‑like focus on objectives.

Unified Stand Against Drug Abuse

The heart of the gathering was a solemn anti‑drug pledge. Dhami invited every participant and onlooker to swear a drug‑free life, urging them to become role models for peers and family members alike.

The league’s rallying cry – “yes to cricket, no to drugs” – was presented as a collective promise to adopt healthier, more uplifting lifestyles. Dhami appealed to the youth to channel their vigor into sports, creativity, and constructive pursuits that benefit both society and the nation.

Sport: A Classroom of Discipline

According to Dhami, sport does more than sculpt the body; it builds confidence, leadership, patience, and a sense of camaraderie. He highlighted that athletes learn humility in triumph and resilience in defeat.

Programs like Khelo India and Fit India are expanding the reach of sports, enabling talent from villages and small towns to shine on national and global stages.

Haryana’s Rich Sporting Heritage

Dhami lauded Haryana’s longstanding contribution to Indian athletics, naming Olympians, Paralympians, Asian Games medalists, and Commonwealth champions as testaments to the state’s sporting spirit. He emphasized that such success is rooted in years of hard work, strict discipline, and unwavering goal‑orientation.

The outdated notion that academics must outrank sports is fading. With improved platforms and support, a career in sports is now a respectable and viable path for today’s youth.

Keeping the Younger Generation Drug‑Free

Dhami warned that drug addiction erodes not only the individual but also families and communities. In contrast, sport provides direction, structure, and a positive identity.

He called on young people to stay away from substances and become ambassadors of the anti‑drug message within their circles.

“When we play together, we build a future free from drugs and full of purpose,” Dhami declared as the ceremony concluded.

The event ended with all attendees joining the chief minister in a unified pledge to reject drugs and embrace sport as a constructive way of life.
