New Delhi – On 6 October, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that left‑handed opening batter Smriti Mandhana will take over as the full‑time skipper of the Indian women’s cricket side, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur.
Mandhana’s Rise on the International Stage
Since breaking into the senior team in 2013, Mandhana has evolved into one of the most consistent run‑makers in women’s cricket, representing India across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She has already captained the side in 18 T20 Internationals and four One‑Day Internationals, and has served as vice‑captain for several campaigns. The board cited this blend of experience and her deep familiarity with the squad as decisive in her elevation.
WPL Success with Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Beyond the national setup, Mandhana has shone in franchise cricket. As the leader of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, she guided the team to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and again in 2026, cementing her reputation as a tactically savvy commander.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Enduring Impact
Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to feature in the playing XI but will hand over the captaincy. Under her stewardship, India clinched its first Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and secured gold at the Asian Games, captaining across all three formats.
Looking Ahead
Mandhana’s first assignment as permanent captain will be a series against Zimbabwe, comprising three T20Is followed by three ODIs beginning on 16 October. The BCCI expressed confidence that her extensive international exposure, prior leadership stints, and proven WPL pedigree will propel the team forward.
