Comprehensive CCTV Rollout Around the Taj Mahal

The Agra Development Authority has approved an ambitious expansion of video monitoring surrounding the world‑renowned Taj Mahal. Ninety state‑of‑the‑art cameras will be strategically placed within a 500‑metre radius, tightening the visual net that watches over the monument’s environment.

Why the Expansion Is Crucial

These additional lenses will focus on the so‑called “yellow zone” that encircles the Taj Mahal, targeting busy thoroughfares, main entry points and other high‑traffic areas that presently suffer from blind spots.

With richer visual data, security forces can react more swiftly to suspicious behaviour, crowd disturbances, or any other incidents that could jeopardise visitor safety.

Integrating With Existing Surveillance Assets

The site already benefits from a CCTV framework installed during the 2016 Tajganj initiative, later enhanced by smart poles equipped with cameras and public‑address systems.

Nevertheless, gaps remain. The new batch of ninety cameras is designed to fill those voids, delivering a seamless, continuous surveillance blanket across the entire perimeter.

Security duties are divided by zones: the monument itself lies in the “red zone,” protected by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), while the surrounding 500‑metre “yellow zone” falls under the jurisdiction of local police and the Punjab and Chandigarh (PAC) forces.

Prioritising Tourist Protection

Authorities expect the upgraded network to not only aid law‑enforcement but also enhance the experience for the millions of tourists who visit each year. Improved monitoring can curb unauthorised activities, ease crowd congestion, and deter incidents targeting visitors.

The system will also keep a tighter watch on individuals known to harass or threaten tourists, reinforcing the Taj Mahal’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination.

Timeline for Deployment

With the tender already announced, contractors have been instructed to begin installation as soon as paperwork is completed. The six‑month deadline underscores the urgency of bolstering security around one of India’s most treasured heritage sites.

Once operational, the expanded CCTV network will provide real‑time, high‑resolution coverage of activity around the Taj Mahal, strengthening both protective measures and overall site management.
