Lucknow – After a detailed aerial and ground assessment of water‑logged zones around the state capital, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ambitious flood‑control initiative. The flagship element is a fresh embankment stretching from Faizullaganj to Naimish, designed to curb the recurring overflow of the Gomti River.

A Green Flood Barrier with Dual Purpose

The planned structure will double as a green corridor, with a paved roadway laid atop the raised levee. Survey teams have been instructed to carry out a top‑down mapping of the Gomti’s banks and to prepare a full‑scale project dossier. Alongside the barrier, an integrated network of drainage channels and pumping stations will siphon rain‑water that accumulates outside the protected zone, enabling swift removal.

On‑Site Relief Assessment

During a visit to the flood‑stricken neighbourhood of Bakshi Ka Talab, the chief minister met with locals, inspected a health camp, and oversaw the distribution of emergency rations. He ordered the relocation of families from high‑risk spots to temporary relief shelters set up in schools and marriage halls.

Assistance for Displaced Households

Camp officials are now mandated to serve hot meals twice a day, provide milk for children, and supply nutrient‑rich food for pregnant women. Livestock owners will receive fodder, while electricity‑deficient sites will be equipped with solar lanterns and Petromax lamps.

Compensation Packages

Families that suffered loss of life due to drowning or lightning will be granted an immediate cash assistance of ₹4 lakh. Households whose homes were completely destroyed and satisfy eligibility criteria will be allotted houses under existing state housing schemes. Agricultural losses—including crops and livestock—will be evaluated so that eligible farmers can claim compensation.

Relief Kits Containing 26 Essentials

Each affected family is receiving a kit stocked with 26 essential items such as rice, wheat flour, potatoes, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices and waterproof sheets. The kits are intended to sustain households until regular supplies are restored.

Security and Medical Arrangements

The CM directed police, Home Guards, PRD staff and local watchmen to patrol the camps and the vacated homes, safeguarding property and deterring looting. Health units will keep anti‑snake‑venom and anti‑rabies injections ready, while dedicated medical and veterinary camps are being rolled out across the hardest‑hit districts.

Why This Year’s Floods Were So Severe

Intense rainfall over the Gomti’s upstream catchment—covering Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and even parts of Nepal—swelled river levels dramatically, submerging low‑lying areas around Lucknow. Positioning the Faizullaganj‑Naimish embankment as a long‑term safeguard promises not only flood mitigation but also enhanced connectivity via the road that will crown the levee.
