Deadly Bathing Incident at Sur Ghat

During the Jitiya celebrations, two eighteen‑year‑old girls, Kajal Kumari and Pinky Kumari of Zakheera, slipped into the swift, deeper currents of the Yamuna River at Sur Ghat, close to the Wazirabad bridge, and tragically drowned while performing the customary river‑bath ritual.

Rescue Efforts and Retrieval

Bystanders shouted for assistance as the teenagers disappeared beneath the water. Local rescue teams, including volunteer divers, launched an immediate search. The divers eventually recovered the bodies, but the victims had already succumbed to the river’s force.

Police Response and Autopsy

A unit from Timarpur police station arrived swiftly, took custody of the bodies and dispatched them for post‑mortem examination.

“The girls entered a deeper part of the river during the bathing rite and, regrettably, drowned,” explained North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt.

An official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact factors that led to the tragedy.

Families Demand Better Ghat Safety

In the aftermath, the families of Kajal and Pinky have raised serious concerns about the safety infrastructure at Sur Ghat. They argue that the hazardous stretch lacked sufficient barricades, clear warning signs, and on‑site security personnel to prevent entry into the deep water.

Police officials have promised a thorough review of existing safety provisions and to address the shortcomings highlighted by the grieving relatives.
