Congress Releases List of Three Aspirants for Upcoming Maharashtra Council Polls

The party has put forward three names for the biennial Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. Two seasoned members are seeking a second term, and a fresh face has been added for the Amravati Teachers constituency.

Seasoned Legislators Return, One New Challenger Joins

Abhijit Wanjari will again contest the Nagpur Division Graduates seat, while Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar is set to re‑run for the Pune Division Teachers seat. Both currently serve as MLCs with their tenures ending in December 2026.

Accompanying them is Aditi Pohare, who will contest the Amravati Division Teachers constituency for the first time, marking her debut in council politics.

Five Seats Up for Election

The ballot will cover five constituencies: three Graduates seats – Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune and Nagpur – and two Teachers seats – Amravati and Pune. All sitting members’ terms conclude on 6 December 2026.

MVA Alliance’s Seat‑Sharing Discussions

The announcements arrive as the Maha Vikas Aghadi—comprising Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT)—continues internal negotiations on how to allocate seats for the council elections. While each party is releasing its own candidate list, the alliance has vowed to synchronize its approach ahead of the October poll.

With the nomination deadline looming, the contest for the five council seats is expected to tighten, setting the stage for a closely watched battle.
