Homs, Syria – On a quiet afternoon, a passenger bus traveling the Masyaf Bridge corridor in the western countryside of Homs was suddenly struck by automatic fire. The assault claimed at least seven lives and left four passengers seriously wounded. The vehicle was transporting employees of a local firm who were heading home after a full day's shift.

SANA, Syria’s state news agency, reported that the gunmen remain unidentified. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while security forces swiftly cordoned off the area and began securing evidence.

Formal Probe Initiated

Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine who ordered the attack and why it was carried out. No militant group or individual has claimed responsibility, and officials have not publicly named any suspects.

"We see this assault as an attempt to destabilise the region and erode public security," said Brigadier General Bassem Mohammad Shaaban, commander of the Homs Internal Security Forces.

Forensic teams are collecting ballistic evidence, and investigators are interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Workers Targeted on Their Way Home

Initial reports confirm the bus was filled with civilian laborers returning to their families after completing their duties. Ambulances ferried the casualties to hospitals throughout the Homs governorate, where they received urgent medical care.

Officials stressed that the investigation will continue until the full circumstances are uncovered and those responsible are held accountable.

Syria’s Ongoing Security Challenges

The incident unfolds against a backdrop of chronic insecurity that has lingered for more than 13 years of conflict, even after the collapse of Bashar al‑Assad’s government in December 2024. While the authorities strive to restore stability, sporadic shootings and violent episodes continue to erupt across various provinces.
