At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday, unidentified individuals hurled bricks at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, Ohio. The projectiles broke multiple windows and left visible damage inside the sanctuary while priests and worshippers were present.
Law Enforcement and Federal Partners Examine the Crime
Local police are scrutinizing the temple’s surveillance footage to reconstruct the event and identify the attackers. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) confirmed that the video has been provided to investigators and that the case has also been forwarded to the FBI and civil‑rights officials.
To date, no suspect has been publicly named and no arrests have been reported.
Faith Leaders Urge an Expedited, Open‑Air Inquiry
National Hindu groups, including the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), have called on officials to act quickly, hold perpetrators accountable, and publicly denounce the attack. CoHNA specifically requested that Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and other local leaders condemn the act and reassure the Hindu community of its safety.
While some organizations suspect a hate‑based motive, law‑enforcement agencies have not yet confirmed a bias element.
No Injuries Reported, Damage Ongoing
Despite the chaos, no one was injured during the incident. The primary loss consists of broken windows and other property damage, which temple staff continue to inventory.
HAF has urged officials to locate the responsible parties and issue a strong public statement against any rhetoric that threatens Hindu or Indian‑American communities.
Historical Vandalism of Hindu Sites Referenced
CoHNA cited previous vandalism cases involving Hindu temples in New York and California, noting that each occurred under different circumstances. Although these incidents raise concern, they are separate investigations and do not alone prove a nationwide pattern.
The Richmond Heights case remains active as authorities continue to analyze video evidence and pursue leads to determine whether religious bias played a role.
