Dehradun: Uttarakhand launched its 2026 Wildlife Week with a vibrant lineup of activities intended to deepen conservation efforts and spotlight the state’s rich natural legacy. The celebration kicked off on 1 October at the Forest Research Institute campus in Dehradun and will continue through 8 October.

Bridging Communities and the Wild

The programme seeks to tighten the bond between nearby villages and the region’s wildlife, urging citizens to play an active role in defending forests, habitats, and biodiversity. Over the seven days, workshops, school‑based outreach sessions, and guided nature treks will illustrate the ecological importance of Uttarakhand’s varied terrains.

The State’s Extraordinary Wildlife Tapestry

From soaring Himalayan summits to the low‑lying Terai plains, Uttarakhand encompasses a striking mosaic of ecosystems. Its woodlands are home to flagship species such as tigers, elephants, leopards, bears and several deer, along with a spectacular array of avian life. Officials stress that safeguarding individual animals is inseparable from preserving the corridors and seasonal routes that enable their movements.

Mitigating Human‑Wildlife Conflict

A core focus of this year’s Wildlife Week is reducing friction between people and wild animals. Communities bordering forested zones often face encounters that endanger livestock, crops and human safety. The campaign therefore centres on three pillars:

  • Awareness: Community meetings and radio programmes educate residents about animal behaviour and safety precautions.
  • Monitoring: Strengthened patrols and the deployment of camera traps track wildlife activity near settlements.
  • Participation: Local volunteers are being trained as wildlife liaisons to report sightings and support rapid‑response actions.

Protecting Corridors and Guiding Development

Authorities reiterate that any new infrastructure or tourism projects must respect established wildlife corridors. Environmental impact assessments are now compulsory for roads, hydro‑electric schemes and mining ventures to ensure critical pathways remain uninterrupted.

Looking Forward

As the week draws to a close on 8 October, officials hope the momentum generated will evolve into lasting community stewardship. By marrying scientific insight with grassroots participation, Uttarakhand aims to foster a harmonious coexistence between its people and the remarkable fauna that call the region home.
